AC Repair or Replacement: How to Decide

Every summer we take calls from homeowners staring at the same decision: pay for another repair, or replace the system outright. There is no universal answer, but there is a reliable way to think it through — and it starts with the age of the equipment.

A central air conditioner typically lasts twelve to seventeen years in our climate. Under about eight years old, repair is almost always correct; the system has most of its life ahead of it and components are often still under manufacturer warranty. Past fifteen years, the calculation flips. You are not just paying for today's repair, you are paying to keep a system alive that will likely need something else within a season or two.

For the years in between, we use a straightforward test: multiply the repair estimate by the age of the unit. If the result exceeds the cost of a new system, replacement is the better financial decision. A $700 repair on a twelve-year-old unit gives you $8,400 — approaching real replacement territory. That same $700 repair on a six-year-old system gives you $4,200, and repair wins clearly.

Refrigerant type matters enormously and is frequently overlooked. Systems built before roughly 2010 typically run R-22, which has been phased out of production. Any repair involving a significant R-22 recharge is expensive and getting worse each year. If your system uses R-22 and has a refrigerant leak, replacement is almost always the sounder choice.

Efficiency deserves a place in the decision too, but an honest one. A fifteen-year-old unit running at its original efficiency will cost noticeably more to operate than a modern system. That said, we are cautious about efficiency claims — a high-efficiency condenser attached to a leaking duct system will not deliver the savings on the label. If we recommend replacement on efficiency grounds, we look at the ductwork in the same visit.

Finally, consider how the system actually performs. If some rooms never cool properly, if the unit runs constantly on hot days, or if humidity stays high indoors, those are sizing or distribution problems that a repair will not solve. Replacement done properly — with a real load calculation — is an opportunity to fix them.

When we come out for a repair-or-replace assessment, we give you the numbers for both paths and our honest recommendation. Sometimes that recommendation is to repair a system a competitor told you to replace. Call us at (347) 636-3982 for a free evaluation.
